Our history
More than 180 years of experience as master chocolatiers and processors. In an artisan way with attention to detail, we continue to share this passion and know-how from Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (Barcelona), the starting point of Simón Coll and from where we continue to write our history. Simón Coll chocolates and Chocolate Amatller give way to almost two centuries of history, where perseverance, innovation and product quality are part of our DNA.
1840 - 1940
Headline title
Simón Mestres, the son of winemakers, started a new business related to the production of chocolate. He created his own formulas, which soon became the main which soon became the main attraction for Casa Simón’s clientele for Casa Simón's clientele. Since then, he has begun the family inheritance with Miquel Mestres and the first packaging to sell chocolate under the Simón brand began to be created. Three decades later, in a space adjacent to the workshop, a mechanized production process began, which gave rise to a varied range of products of superior quality. It is from this moment that we begin to talk about the first chocolate factory.
1950 - 1970
Headline title
Miquel Coll was a pastry chef as well as a chocolatier, he was passionate about both activities and sought excellence in both. He chose to make quality chocolate, working with good ingredients and using suitable machinery to achieve a fine and characteristic texture. It was at this stage that the first communication and promotion began in the media, radio advertisements and albums with sticker collections. This strategy helped to advance with the commercial network of the entire Spanish landscape.
1972 - 1992
Headline title
Xavier Coll, son of Miquel and fifth generation of the family, incorporates Chocolate Amatller into the Simón Coll company. An emblematic brand of Barcelona and founded by Gabriel Amatller in 1797, it had been at the forefront of the sector in Catalonia and throughout the Spanish territory, especially at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, with a strong personality and a great graphic identity, Chocolate Amatller remains one of the most recognised brands in the chocolate sector.
In 1982, Simón Coll opts for differentiation from competitors and diversifies the product into seasonal or seasonal chocolates, such as Christmas and Easter. This fact, along with the internationalisation of the brand, places Simón Coll on the radar of the most recognised chocolates in Europe.

2004 - 2010
Headline title
Maria Coll, sixth generation of the family and current CEO of the company, joins to value the entire range of Simón Coll products. In 2007, the chocolate market was evolving towards a more adult and gourmet consumption. It is then that Chocolate Amatller moves in this direction with new proposals for flavours and textures.
2012 - 2017
Headline title
The Espai Xocolata Simón Coll visitor centre opens its doors. It is born with the desire to be a place to spread the brand, as well as the culture of cocoa and chocolate. The Espai Xocolata represents the brand's main speaker and is a meeting place for all chocolate lovers. It is the following year when Simón Coll initiates a research methodology on aromatic cocoa. They study the conditions and processes that, in origin, influence the generation of primary aromas in cocoa. The inauguration of the Casa Amatller store also takes place in this decade. In 2014 Casa Amatller, located at Paseo de Gracia 41, opens its doors to showcase an oasis of chocolate.v
2018 - Present
Headline title
In the same place where Simón Mestres founded his workshop, a new space for research and dissemination of cocoa is born. Three spaces with different approaches but with the same objective: to promote the culture of chocolate. The old factory is reformed and gives its name to Bean-to-Bar, Simón Coll's R&D factory. The Tasting Room is also part of this project along with the remodeling of the Casa Simón Bombonería. Chocolate Amatller also opens its doors with a new location located in the heart of Barcelona, right next to the emblematic La Pedrera building. Continuing with the retail project, in November 2021 Simón Coll opens its first pop-up store in the Diagonal Mar shopping centre in Barcelona.
